the head of our graphics department just told me that i need to go to 29 palms outside of death valley and stay in the 29 palms motel. he said that cool people from LA go there, and that i would love it.
i drove through death valley once. it was scary and intense but pretty rad. i definitely want to go back. i've never heard of 29 palms though. whats your take on it, frank?

Re: 29 palms
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 12:58 PMTwentynine Palms is like So Cal's version of Gerlach, if Gerlach were bigger and had stores and things to do. It's right by Joshua Tree. I've never stayed in the town, but passed through it on the way to other things.
It's kind of like an oasis. Like Palm Springs without the frat boys and rich people. -

Re: 29 palms
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 1:13 PMyup, twentynine palms is near joshua tree, not so close to death valley. it's a jarhead town (close to a military base) so you can get excellent deals on military surplus at the local thrift store. i got three pairs of BDUs for $7 (most surplus stores sell them for $20 each).
joshua tree is *wonderful* and totally worth a visit, but honestly i don't think twentynine palms has that much character, say, compared to gerlach. it's bigger and not very interesting. if you want desert character, go to borrego springs in the middle of anza borrego state park near san diego. -

Re: 29 palms
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 1:14 PMoh, and if you go down there check out the salton sea, slab city and salvation mountain near niland. crazy weird folk art and a burning man-like squatter community of octegenarians living in trailers in the middle of nowhere. -

THE MIGHTY INTEGRATRON

You and Kiko should come down here and we'll drive around and look at all the weird stuff in the deserts outside LA. And there's a LOT of it. -

Re: 29 palms
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 3:33 PMWould love to go, but it will have to wait until after Burning Man.
I have two swims this month and haven't even started on the Firewall yet.
But September/October is wide open. -

Re: 29 palms
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 3:39 PMthat's the better time to go anyway, as it will be really hot right now. of course, i hope to be fully employed by then...
but i'm somewhat heat resistant and might consider a trip sooner. depends on how much my impending car repair costs! -

I love all those places. I'm thinking about doing a Salton Sea trip soon. Maybe I'll buy some "shorefront" property when I'm there.

No, it's not really very interesting. Typical Southern Cal desert town, pretty much. Mostly it's interesting because of its proximity to fun desert places.

Re: 29 palms
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 5:04 PMThe 29 Palms Inn is a great little place nestled in Twentynine Palms, and next to the entrance of the Joshua National Park. The Inn is nice especially in spring. The national park is gorgeous. Other than the Inn and the park, twentynine is pretty still. I'd highly recommend a visit to this area.
